Review of Where the Wild Things Are (1975) by Lee D — 30 Jun 2014
I actually think I reviewed this one a while back on a different account when the movie first hit the scene. at the time I felt the movie was not much of a success in my eyes, seeing it as just an absurd and bizarre adaptation that fell short.
cut to now after getting to see it years later I feel like I've matured in my views on movies and how to look at them. This movie captures something that not many children's films can. it goes into the mindset of a troubled child and shows the complexities and backward nature of a child acting out.
it also takes a childhood classic and makes into a cinematic masterpiece. I've always loved Maurice Sendak's book and the movie captures the visual richness of the book (and then some) perfectly.
all in all I'd say that if you haven't seen this one and you loved the children's book then you should check this one out. if you've seen and didn't like it the first time, I challenge you to watch it again and think about the mindset from which the story is told.
it'll make much more sense and you'll probably enjoy it more, I sure did.
