Review of Where the Truth Lies (2005) by James S — 21 Dec 2010
Sets itself up as a rather classy thriller but actually comes across as more of a high profile porn movie.
The presence of some decent actors, Colin Firth, Alison Lohman, Kevin Bacon, the american girl who was in Peep Show, plus a story which sounds intriguing enough (a journalist tries to discover the truth about what really happened when a dead girl showed up in two comedians hotel room) would lead you to believe that this was going to be a semi-decent mystery.
Unfortunately the cast look like they are merely going through the motions, presumably because the script makes so little sense that they just played it scene by scene. The film is annoyingly told in flashbacks in which everyine kid of looks the same as they do now. The film makers seem to have realised this so they periodically try to spice things up with some soft porn style fumbling which adds not a whole lot to the story. It is like a high class blue movie.
The only plus points are the cast who manage well with the horrible material and a twist which while it might not be blindingly obvious is hardly worth waiting for.
A squandered cast and opportunity, the film could do with being re-edited to make some sort sense with certain scenes being omitted.
