Review of Where the Heart Is (2000) by Colin C — 04 Jun 2011
Natalie Portman's convincing turn as a well-meaning Southern girl belies the insincerity of Where the Heart Is. Artificially crammed with chicken-soup-for-the-soul moments, Where the Heart Is tells the story of Novalee Nation, a young pregnant girl whose boyfriend abandons her at a Wal-Mart. She ultimately gives birth there, and the local news brands the child "The Wal-Mart Baby.".
The characters are mostly easy, black-and-white archetypes -- gentle Southern folk who dispense wisdom that tries its darndest to sound homespun and a few implausibly incorrigible douchebags.
