I never really got the hunter s. thompson "thing". i've read only one of his books (which I didn't think was anything special) and seen 2 movies based on his writing - this and "fear and loathing".
i'd say that murray's thompson is as good as depp's. what makes the difference is the direction - gilliam's "fear and loathing" captures the spirit better; linson's direction is pretty conventional.
