Review of Where the Boys Are (1960) by Michael K — 08 Apr 2008
I grew up watching this film as it's one of my mother's favorite movies. Watching it in my adult years, I realize just how far ahead of its time it was (in one of the first scenes, soon-to-be-nun Dolores Hart admits that sex before marriage is okay).
And yet at the same time, the film is just as much dated and old-fashioned as anything that came out around the same time (despite what Dolores Hart says, she is unwilling to "go all the way" with George Hamilton and even regrets what she said after Yvette Mimieux has her "accident").
But despite the social overtones, this is funny and delightful to watch. There are some great characterizations by Paula Prentiss and Jim Hutton (my favorite couple in the movie) and Connie Francis is fun as the one who never gets the guy.
Watch it if you want to know what your parents were watching when they were kids.
