Review of Where in the World Is Osama Bin Laden? (2008) by Monk M — 22 Oct 2008
I don't think any of the complaints about this movie are warranted. of course he didn't find bin laden, that wasn't the point of the documentary. I don't mind him acting a little simple-minded either.
most people don't know any real facts about the middle east or arabic africa. I think that americans don't see enough of the destruction brought about by our government's foreign policy. spurlock did a good job directing the focus to how these people are living with the threat of daily violence and uncertainty.
it shows that the global opinion of the US is important. in the deleted scenes, spurlock talks with a guy who used to be in the IRA and they make a parallel with the IRA's struggles and those of the israelis and palestinians, and the taliban and al-qaeda and everyone who's fighting them.
the important point is that a military victory will not solve any problems, will only cause more problems. and even though most of the points made (people aren't all that different) are simple, sesame street-style kind of things, most people don't behave as if they know these things.
they let fox news paint a picture of Islam that involves nothing but bombs and freedom-hating. and that's ridiculous. this was a decent documentary, but had some silly parts that I rolled my eyes at.
