Review of Where Eagles Dare (1968) by Raging F — 15 Nov 2007
One star is for Burton, one star is for Eastwood, one is for the scenery and the last is for the action. This is pure Boys' Own stuff from a piece of Alastair MacLean hokum. An old-fashioned war film with the usual not too bright German soldiers walking into traps, plucky Allies doing death-defying stunts, one very cold, Blond, Blue Eyed Nazi Officer, and a twisty double and triple crossing plot.
Rather nasty in its sadism and general bloodletting. Eastwood, the only American, is there as a plot device and to ensure Hollywood money was put into it. I fell in love with this film when I was eleven and I prefer this to the more wel-known and better regarded "Guns of Navarone" (another MacLean tale about action behind enemy lines).
Great music, some good one-liners ("Do you have women stashed all over Germany?" "She's in disguise, and boy, what a disguise!" "I told him I was Himmler's brother.").
