Review of Where Eagles Dare (1968) by Josh K — 03 Aug 2009
Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood sleepwalk through this dumb WWII action film. The filmmakers inexplicably focus more on the logistics of the heroes' operation (infiltrating a Wehrmacht fortress in the snowy Bavarian alps) and give short shrift to characterization or even plausibility (characters allegedly speaking in German don't even bother switching from American- and British-accented English).
The heroes are just ciphers, and the major revelation at the end of the film just falls laughably flat without the emotional resonance the filmmakers clearly intended (Someone is not who they say they are? Who cares!).
