Review of Where Eagles Dare (1968) by Joe C — 23 May 2010
An epic "men on a mission" war film. Yes, it's a bit long, but the action scenes and constant plot twists really kept my interest throughout. The action, suspense and stunt-work in this film are finer than any of the James Bond films from this era (except of course, Goldfinger and You Only Live Twice).
My only complaint is the focus of the story is so heavily centered on Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood's characters that you really don't have anything emotionally invested in the other squad members when the shit goes down (like in the Dirty Dozen or Kelly's Heroes).
Still, it's one HELL of an entertaining war film. The Nazis speaking English instead of German is at first a bit of a strange and confusing conceit on the part of the director, but you eventually just get used to it.
A small part of me wishes Quentin Tarantino delivered a film like this instead of the kind of film Inglourious Basterds turned out to be, but whatever, Where Eagles Dare still holds up pretty well.
