Review of Where Eagles Dare (1968) by James R — 17 Dec 2017
A pretty good WWII film that may be a bit dated, but is still a pretty solid espionage thriller. Where Eagles Dare is about a group of allied commandos attempt to infiltrate a German controlled fortress in the Alps of Southern Bavaria.
Led by British Major Smith (Richard Burton) the team works together along with an American Army Ranger Lieutenant Schaffer (Clint Eastwood). The film itself has a quite a bit of action it in and has a pretty smart story with a great twist to the entire thing.
I actually enjoyed the filming locations and really enjoyed the fact that the team was up against a ton of odds going to a fortress that's only accessible by helicopter or tram. I will say its a bit dated on some parts because none of these guys has a German accent.
They casually talk in British or American accents and the Germans don't seem to notice. It's very noticeable now a days, but maybe you just have to suspend your belief for a bit. My only other nag is that there's very little character development here.
We never learn too much about the main leads and honestly Clint Eastwoods reasoning for being in the film is pretty bizarre to say the least. Overall, still a solid classic WWII film that if it intrigues ya I would recommend checking out.
