Review of When You're Strange (2010) by Jack G — 27 Apr 2010
A good documentary, though not giving a lot that fans of the Doors won't already know for the most part; only details about the court case with Morrison's obscenity trial, and the technical side of the music that went into recording the albums and the Doors' unique sound (i.e. no bass), are really fascinating in a 'new' sense. The rest of it though is... good. I'm sure if you don't know much about the Doors, or haven't seen the Stone movie, you'll find it revelatory. But, one gripe as a Doors fan I have (and I'm a HUGE fan, like this is a movie made for me), is that we never get the sense that the rest of the Doors have much going on outside of Morrison. Perhaps this is the point, that he was such a dynamic presence and superstar and, often times, really a crappy guy ("Jimbo" as his alcoholic "alter-ego" Ray Manzarek called him), but I'd like to know more about Manzarek other than he liked meditating after not liking acid anymore, or that John got headaches during The Soft Parade.
Then again, one thing I didn't know until seeing this - 'The End' is really about his breakup with a girlfriend in high school. Damn.
