Review of When You're Strange (2010) by Dave J — 09 Jul 2010
A compelling documentary that captures the charisma of The Doors through some terrific concert footage, and also gives a flavour of the madness they lived through both in their career as a band and in the social conflicts of the Sixties.
Jim Morrison's sporadic creative brilliance and astonishing personal magnetism is here for all to see, but so is his self-indulgence and arrogance. It's nice to see the other Doors given some credit for the distinctive combination of sounds and playing styles they brought to the band, especially as it's obvious from this film that they had a lot to put up with from Mr.
Mojo Risin' on his bad days. There are few new facts here, but there is some rare and revealing backstage footage and some intriguing excerpts from 'HWY', a rarely-seen experimental road movie starring the Lizard King and a wounded coyote.
