Review of When You're Strange (2010) by David T — 01 Jan 2011
"I'm interested in anything about revolt, disorder, chaos, especially activity that appears to have no meaning. It seems to me to be the road toward freedom.".
Jim Morrison.
Has any other band in such a short space of time had the success and the scope as The Doors?
One of my favourite bands of all time, the music, the words, the image and the danger of The Doors make them such a compelling band.
Of course Jim Morrison always gets the lions share of the press/screen time, he was the perfect front man, very edgy and unpredictable but when he was on fire he couldn't be matched and properly never will be...but the whole band made it happen, they carried Jim to the places he wanted to go on stage. This isn't the finest music documentary ever made but it still tells the story of The Doors in a fairly unique way...I found Johnny Depp's narration to be very monotone but I think it helped with the feel and atmosphere of the story telling...it was not about Johnny Depp, sometimes the sheer mention of his name like Jim himself sends people into a frenzy but thankfully he is just a minor footnote.
I don't think many fans who already know The Doors story will find too much out that they didn't already know but this should not be a distracter.
Any fans of The Doors either new or old will enjoy this...
