So the world's going to come to an end in less than a year. You have time to build a pace ship to save a small part of humanity. Who goes? This was the overall question and the drinving force behind this movie.

Yes, the movie is over 50 years old, and the dialogue shows it. Nevertheless, the question does make one think. A classic in its own right, and it changed science fictions movies for ever.
