Review of When We Were Kings (1996) by Cam B — 10 Jan 2009
With all of the undying praise around 'When We Were Kings', I expected an unprecedented, extraordinary documentary. It is a fascinating look at Ali, Foreman and Don King, and the presence of writers Mailer and Plimpton is great for those of us with an interest in the journos too.
Am I only giving it 4 stars because I expected so very much? Maybe. Or maybe I already knew so much of the story that I wasn't as enthralled as others were... Either way, it has made me think I should read more on Ali, especially from The Best American Sports Writing of the Century, where I originally passed over much of the section devoted to the man.
