Review of When We Were Kings (1996) by Stephen C — 19 Sep 2010
The Rumble in the Jungle has gone down in history as one of the greatest Boxing bouts in History.#.
This film tells the story of the events leading up to and during the fight which was a key moment not just in sports History but in black history also.
Ali hasd the gift of the gab and in the film he comes across as a very funny and very intelligent man, which makes his decline all the more heart breaking.
Foreman was potrayed as a killer who spoke very little and was expected to beat Ali by some margin.
On top of the fight we get an ace soul concert featuring BB King and James Brown ,and a corrupt dictator who may have ordered a 100 people killed below the stadium where the fight was staged.
The film is packed with great footage and the taliking heads of Norman Mailer and George Plimpton add to the stories interest.
These days where boxing seems to be losing its way its refreshing to see a film which reminds you just how popular the sport really was at that time.
Spot on.
