Review of When We Were Kings (1996) by Kenneth L — 15 Oct 2010
This is quite a good documentary. Muhammad Ali is just so much fun to watch. The man was walking charisma. Not only was he the world's best boxer for a long time, but he was also smart, funny, and a genius at self-promotion.
It's also interesting to watch the young George Foreman, who was so different from the grill salesman we know today. The movie just straightforwardly documents the events leading up to the famous Rumble in the Jungle fight, and the fight itself.
There's tons of archival footage, as well as some contemporary commentary, most of it coming from Norman Mailer. It's about as well made a documentary on the subject as you could expect. There never was anybody else quite like Muhammad Ali.
