Review of When in Rome (2010) by Gustavo G — 04 Aug 2010
As the old saying goes, â??When in Rome, do as the Romans do.â?? Well, in the case of this movie, you have to take the same attitude if you really want to enjoy it for what it is worth. You have to allow yourself to believe in the notion that a coin that is retrieved from the â??fountain of loveâ?? will make its rightful owner fall in love with the person who retrieved it from the fountain.
Once you set your mind to believe in that little bit of magic, then you can really enjoy the movie and its passive humor. I say passive because the movie is not really funny. It is a romantic comedy, but the definition of romantic comedy suggests that viewers will also laugh. That was hardly the case. It does have some funny/quirky moments though, but few and far in between.
What I liked best about this film are some of the actors who have minor roles. I love Anjelica Huston â?? she was beautiful, elegant, and had a regal look back in her younger years, and when I saw John Heder and Efren Ramirez (stars in â??Napoleon Dynamiteâ??), playing small roles in the film, I could not help but smile.
Overall, the movie was cute and somewhat whimsy in the love department. It is not overly emotional or mushy and Iâ??m sure you will enjoy it if you are in the mood for romance, or magic.
