Review of When in Rome (2010) by Evan D — 06 Oct 2010
While delievering big stars, 'When In Rome' fails to deliever the laughs. In a sentence: it's a typical, cheesy, quirky romantic comedy. The story focuses on Beth, a curator for art shows in New York City, who is unlucky in love and covers up for it by ambitiously diving into her work.
When her younger sister gets married, though, it sends her on a trip to Rome for the wedding where she meets Nick, the best man who is rather accident-prone. Upon seeing him kiss another woman, though, Beth feels that love is mocking her and takes some coins from a reputed fountain of love.
She takes the coins in a drunken aspiration to save them from a life of broken heartedness, but doesn't anticpate that there is an old Italian legend that possesses the owners of the coins to fall in love with you.
Beth is, then, pursued, quite aggressively, by five men.. one of whom is Nick. Upon learning of the legend and clearly seeing how real it is, she isn't sure whether Nick's love is real or not.
The cast of this movie was fantastic: Kristen Bell, Josh Duhamel, Anjelica Huston, Will Arnett, Jon Heder, Dax Shepard, and even Danny DeVito! Unfortunately, the film's writing wasn't quite so good.
It seemed to try too hard to get the laughs, using any slapstick or predictable cheesy joke that they could. It was well directed and featured really good performances, just lacked in being the romantic comedy it set out to be.
