Review of When in Rome (2010) by James M — 08 Mar 2011
"When in Rome" was bad. So bad it would probably take me an hour and a half to write out all that was wrong with it. Valiant as I am, I would consider it a worthwhile sacrifice knowing my hour and a half review had spared you the same length of terrible movie. Unfortunately, I don't have the time to write overlong reviews and you probably lack the dedication to read one so I'm going to limit myself to commenting on only the really, really bad.
Plot Twist- The twist is so painfully obvious I could tell it to you without needing to warn you of spoilers. And when I say painfully obvious I mean picture a circumcision sans-medication. With rusty scissors.
Directing- Comedy is about timing, knowing when to hit when the time is right. Lets pretend "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" was the Muhammad Ali of 1964. Fit, young and with the timing of a stop watch. Now in the red corner you have "When in Rome" represented by the Muhammad Ali of today. In your mind have those two boxers go at it and the ass whipping you are surely imagining is exactly the comparison between these two movies.
Acting- This movie has too much talent on screen for me to attribute its failures to the acting. With often hilarious actors like Danny Devito(It's always sunny) and Will Arnett(Arrested Development)I just don't know how this movie failed to make me even chuckle. Josh Duhamel and Kristen Bell both play the parts given to them fine. Unfortunately, the parts given to them feel like they are written by someone as talented as Tara Gilesbie.
Well, that about summarizes my views on this incredibly lackluster film. I was hoping to add a comparison about how this movie was about as fun as a train load of sleeping nuns but then I realized one of the nuns might snore or fart or yawn in an amusing way completely blowing this movie out of the water, F***ing over my Simile.
