Review of When Harry Met Sally... (1989) by Andy R — 13 Dec 2010
Norah Ephron became THE romantic comedy writer and Meg Ryan THE leading lady after this film. Ephron's wit and insight is what takes many of her movies above the typical romatic comedy drizzle that infiltrates so many theaters today. You find yourself saying "Wow, that's so true!" in the film after Harry makes a insightful yet pessimistic remark instead of "aww, how sweet" after many scenes. This isn't to say that the film is over-intellectual. There's certainly chemistry there, but the chemistry develops through perfectly delivered lines and insightful conversations. This isn't to say there isn't anything physical going on. Most of the conversations revolve around the physical interactions and instances of physical intimacy that do take place in the film.
Ephron ultimately shows thatâ??s itâ??s possible to make a talky and insightful romantic comedy without leaving the sexy out and that you donâ??t have to be Woody Allen to do it.
