Review of When Harry Met Sally... (1989) by Tsukasa A — 05 Nov 2012
The 'rom' outdoes the 'com' for me with When Harry Met Sally, it doesn't provoke as many guffaws as a great comedy should. The depth of character development in this film is its greatest strentgh.
Importantly, by the end we care about the fate of the titular pairing, down to good writing but also great turns from Crystal and Ryan. This certainly puts the current crop of romantic comedies to shame.
Although this isn't quite up there with the very best romantic comedies, It Happened One Night, Annie Hall and Groundhog Day (and probably not too many others), this is just about as iconic and been inspirational as there has been within the sub-genre.
