Review of When Harry Met Sally... (1989) by Adrian B — 18 Jun 2011
Harry (Billy Crystal) drives himself and Sally (Meg Ryan) from Chicago to New York for their various job prospects and head their separate directions as they get there. Five years later, they have a chance encounter on an aircraft, talk the majority of the way, including the fact they are both in serious relationships, and soon as they get to their destination, the part ways again. Another five years pass, and they meet again, both coming off failed relationships, and begin to hang around each other, though no love affair begins...and then finally, well you can guess.
"When Harry Met Sally" is by no means the best comedy and it is pretty predictable, but it's like "Rocky." It has charm and it has a ripple effect after the viewer watches the film. However, there are some other strengths. First, I liked how they had several interviews with older couples on their first meets. Second, I liked the chemistry between Ryan and Chrystal, as well as the other couple played by Carrie Fisher and Bruno Kirby. Third, the film moves quite quickly thanks to the script. Finally, I liked the score, with the song "It Had to Be With You" consistently playing. It isn't all that funny, but has moments that make it memorable.
