Review of What's Your Number? (2011) by Harry W — 10 Mar 2013
What's Your Number? is better than the average romantic comedy of modern day, because it's intentions are good and so are it's leads.
Anna Faris is skilled with her usual comedic timing, and despite certain scenes where her voice may get irritating to the viewer she is consistently funny as well as sexy.
Chris Evans also provided a surprisingly funny lead and played the usual handsome but well hearted dude with effort and comedic timing. He displays the ability to branch out in What's Your Number?.
However, What's Your Number? also suffers from many of the cliches of the modern romantic comedy genre.
Specifically, it's that the uncreative plot is very formulaic and utterly predictable when the audience knows that eventually Ally will realise that 'love was there all along'.
Also, it seems that What's Your Number? is derivative of Bridesmaids, which despite working in some aspects of the story is unimpressive in What's Your Number? because it's all too recognisable. The script in particular is derivative of Bridesmaids, which despite providing laughs thanks to a sufficient amount of naughty language, doesn't supply sufficient evidence that What's Your Number? is a film that stands alone. However, it is a sign that female driven comedies may have sufficiently upped the ante out of forced soppy language into a more comedic manner thanks to Bridesmaids, so it may be a sign of a step up for the future.
So What's Your Number? is ok, and it delivers a decent amount of laughs, but it suffers the burdens of many other films of the genre, including the stupidity of a title that is phrased in a casual sense, like 'She's out of my league' or 'How do you know?'.
