Review of What's Your Number? (2011) by Mike D — 07 Sep 2013
There seems to be a cheap, endless supply of romantic comedies that are churned out by studios each year, mostly because we as an audience continue to show up, and 'What's Your Number?' is a prime example of this phenomenon.
Led by Anna Faris and Chris Evans, 'Number?' is your standard romcom that follows the troubled life of a 20-something woman who loses her job and has an early-life crisis because she can't stay in a serious relationship, and she goes back to find the right guy once she hits her "number" (20).
Of course, Faris makes any film that much funnier, as she is a great comedic actress, but the material she has to work with here is not the greatest (in fact, it's a little below average, at best).
Her on-screen chemistry with Evans is alright, and both are good actors in their own right, but something just doesn't work when looking at the whole picture. On the positive side, it's nice to see the city of Boston have such a great supporting role, as its charm definitely shines through despite the silliness of the plot.
The dialogue is nothing special, as you can basically swap 'Number's script with any similar movie and it would still make sense. The added bonus of minor roles by Chris Pratt (Faris' real-life husband) and Faye Dunaway as Faris' micromanaging mother are nice and all, but do little to improve the core of the film, which is an overdone, annoying tale that has been told time and time again.
'What's Your Number?' is far from being a 10/10...maybe 10/50.
