Review of What's Up, Tiger Lily? (1966) by Sam T — 28 Jun 2007
It took about 22 minutes and 34 seconds for the novelty of the "comical" over-dubbing to hit the bottom of the barrel where it lay in wreckage with other humorous greats: The Adventures of Pluto Nash, Beethoven the 3rd, Fever Pitch, and Dreamgirls.
The Spike TV show, Most Extreme Challenge (MXC), does a far better job at over-dubbing an extremely odd Japanese game show. Woody Allen's guest appearances during a mock interview whose purpose was to explain to flummuxed audiences that can't seem to grasp his "high-brow" humor, only served his ego.
That aside, I love Woody Allen, but this film was a miss miss miss. There were ample opportunities to keep the film funny, but he appeared to be tied down to the narration of a poorly semi-serious semi-comedic spy film that he was supposed to avoid.
This film falls below the already subterranean bar of comedic spy films held up by Spy Hard and Naked Gun-then again you can't be far from the top when Austin Powers is your king.
