Review of What's New Pussycat? (1965) by John P — 26 Nov 2008
It's goofy as hell, but I like that. Perhaps I expected something overblown and stone-cold steve stupid like Casino Royale, but this Feldman-produced psychadelic 60s comedy seems.... Well, restrained in comparison to its spiritual sequel. Maybe it's because it has one director and screenwriter, and it's not based on a pre-existing property.
Anyway, Woody Allen's script is absolutely hilarious. It's dry in some places, and slapstick in others. All of the leads are great, and it's a nice change to see Peter O'Toole do comedy (I only really know him as T.E Lawrence, but that's my own fault, I guess), and he does it well. Peter Sellers could make me laugh on the worst day of my life.
It's dated as hell, but it's still funny and worth a watch. Besides, it's Citizen Kane compared to Casino Royale.
