ANGELA BASSETT.
A noble mixture of brains and beauty ? Angela Bassett is not only an accomplished actress but she earned a scholarship to Yale University. There she earned a BA in African-American Studies and a Masters at Yale School of Drama. Not bad for a girl born in Harlem where she was brought up by a single mother in constant financial hardship.
Perhaps it's this background that allowed her to give the epic depictions of strong women overcoming adversity for which she is best known.
Her long list of film credits include Boys n the Hood, Malcom X, Strange Days, Waiting to Exhale, How Stella got her Groove back and The Score. However her most acclaimed performance was as Tina Turner in the bio-pic 'What's love got to do with it?' for which she won a Golden Globe, becoming the first black actress to earn a Globe for Best Actress in a musical or comedy. She was also nominated for a Best Actress Academy award for this work.
Among many TV roles, Ms. Bassett also portrayed Michael Jackson's mother in the mini-series 'The Jacksons: An American Dream'. She also had appearances in 'The Cosby Show', '30 Something' and a longer run in 'ER'.
Ms. Bassett told the Los Angeles Times '[No one says] 'You know what? I'm gonna be blacker today!' It's my culture. It's not something I put on or take off or show more. You just communicate that in the way you live your life.".
She attends LA's West Angeles Church of God along with fellow actor Denzel Washington. She's also an avid supporter of youth performing arts and an ambassador of UNICEF for the US.
