Review of What's Love Got to Do with It (1993) by Victor L — 17 Feb 2008
:fresh: I could really feel emotionally damaged by Turner's suffering and desperation living with such an animal as Ike Turner was. There are some musical numbers that are exciting and amazing homenages to Tina, for example: A Fool in Love, Disco Inferno, Proud Mary and Shake your Tail Feather. At the begining the story was a little slow and didn't care too much for it, then when Tina and Ike Turner reached the fame, the story takes an interesting turn. The way the director did the musical biopic is a little formulaic and only shows one side: Tina's version of the story, the story told by the one who at the end triumphed and Ike couldn't do anything to defend himself because he was in jail. What I mean is, maybe the film would have been much better with a little more impartiallity. .

There are some scenes that I still doubt it really happened, the last two encounters between Tina and Ike, look like gotten from Tina's paranoia. Now I understand why Tina became budhist, it was the religion that saved her life and gave her strenght to change her life and run away..

Angela Bassett and Laurence Fishburne were great in this film. Well deserved Academy Award Nomination for both..
