Review of What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993) by Alvin Y — 16 Aug 2010
DiCaprio and Depp were both amazing in this film. What I like in this movie is that even though we have seen a lot of movies that have the same story and concept like this one, still it works in many ways. This is a movie where we care more of this Grape family, Gilbert Grape of course played by Johnny Depp, his 2 sisters Amy and Ellen, his mother who is obese, and Arnie which is played by Leo DiCaprio, and the people surrounds them like Becky played by Juliette Lewis. Also, DiCaprio's performance here as a mentally ill person is so very well done, I was amazed by his acting that I felt his illness becomes a big inspiration to his family. The good thing is that we have to see more and care more to these characters so that we can fully absorbed and get sense about thier personalities and their relationship to Gilbert Grape.
Quickly, this is one of the best films about family and love life and finding a hope and dream at the same time. All in all, acting, perfect shots, character development, and soundtrack, all perfectly fit well in this beautiful and magnificent film. From start to end you will be surprisingly shocked and cried and laughed most of the time by this movie. So, any errors and mistakes done in this movie, absolutely no 0% for wrongs and obviously 100% for the whole movie.
