Review of Whatever Works (2009) by Simona B — 09 Jul 2010
Whatever Works is to Take The Money And Run in film what Mere Anarchy is to Above the Law, Below the Box Springs in literature. Those who have read Mere Anarchy as well as Allen's previous work will understand me when I submit that, whilst good old Woody been hilarious for 50 years, in both film and writing his older pieces outshine his newer ones.
Just like his essays, Allen's films have changed their subject matter without changing their style or point of view; and this is why I find it exceedingly surprising that somehow his pisstakes from the 70s and 80s are harder-hitting than his current ones.
Having said that, it was delightful to hear Woody's rants taken from his short essays spiced up with gems like "no-talent zombie momser" (this particular jewel comes courtesy of Mere Anarchy) and translated into film lingo by Curb Your Enthusiasm's Larry David.
