Review of Whatever Works (2009) by Christopher P — 03 Dec 2010
A surprisingly offensive and unpleasant outburst of arrogant, condescending, left-wing prejudice against "regular America". I like Woody Allen's movies, but Allen has never been as nakedly bitter and unapologetically contemptuous of his audience as he is here.
Whereas Allen's past films have been good-natured satires, this script seems to have been written with the deliberate intention of alienating anybody who doesn't hold a world view similar to Allen's.
As you watch the film, you can practically feel Allen's acidic, hateful spit hitting your face. If your personal politics skew anywhere to the right of "liberal Democrat" (or if you're just a nice person), chances are you'll be insulted by this 90-minute diatribe.
Bile-soaked, mean-spirited, and sour. Where did Allen's sense of humor go?
