Review of Whatever Works (2009) by John S — 17 Apr 2011

I watched this because I'm a fan of Larry David, Woody Allen, and Evan Rachel Wood, and also because I've never seen Henry Cavill act, and I wanted to see him, before he appears in Man of Steel (I still think he's horrible for the role, but I don't want to bore you with that rant).

Allow to start off by stressing my pre-conceptions about how this film would be (because of all of the aforementioned) and also because I found myself relating to Boris on many levels. Yes, you should probably be alarmed, because no one should be like Boris, but I am not shameful in admitting that I'm exactly like him.

I found his dialogue, incredibly interesting, insightful, and engaging, I hung onto his every word. Halfway through the film, I was worried that the plot was becoming too obvious, but I was thoroughly satisfied with the ending, and was impressed by the character development, although it was bridging on cheesy at some points.

Overall, the film works well together, in the way everything meshes. My only real issue was that some of the characters were poorly written, and most of them were stereotypes, agonizing, and exaggerated.

But in the end, I had a great time, and I very much enjoyed the entire experience.
