Review of Whatever Works (2009) by Joe T — 14 Sep 2010
I cannot believe it took this long to pair Woody Allen and Larry David. A lighter Woody Allen affair, Whatever Works follows, yes, more Manhattanites dealing with their eccentricities and looking for love, etc.
Allen still retains the ability to writer clever scripts, shoot New York in such a wonderful way, and elicit unique perfomances from his talented cast (Evan Rachel Wood and Patricia Clarkson are particularly fun).
The only drawback of the film, really, is David, who is - let's face it - a one-note actor. However, that one note is really funny and entertaining, which is why Curb Your Enthusiasm has enjoyed such success.
No, the problem is David is so thoroughly entrenched with his Curb persona that one cannot escape comparing this film to Curb, and in that respect it fall short, especially for fans of the show. If regarding this in terms of late-period Woody Allen, it's one of his better films of the 2000s, which has had some high highs and low lows.
