Review of Whatever Works (2009) by John M — 07 Jan 2010
Woody Allen acting through Larry David. It's Larry David playing Woody Allen playing Boris Yellnikoff, a cranky, older gentleman who happens to be a genius (and not shy to admit it). He lives in New York, and one night, coming home, he comes across a Mississippi runaway (Evan Rachel Wood) right near his home.
After a lot of persuasion, he decides to let her stay with him until she can get on her feet. Days turn into weeks, and they enter a very unique relationship. All the staples of old-school Woody Allen are here: mad at the world, pessimistic, angry ranting, breaking the fourth wall, except it's Larry David, not Woody Allen like it usually is, in the starring role.
If you like vintage Woody Allen movie where he is annoyed with life and not afraid to vent it, you will love this, because this is proof that Allen's still got it.
