Review of Whatever Works (2009) by Alexandra D — 01 Mar 2010
Well, Wody Allen has done it again. He has given us a unique, interesting, funny film that provides a solid commentary on life in the 21st Century. He created a lead character that must have been meant for Larry David all along. When the film began and Larry David began ranting, I knew that I would enjoy it. Of course, Larry David is completely typecast at this point but in a way that provides hilarity. The dialogue was top drawer.
The ending was entirely too convienent and seemed rushed and abrupt. I thought the entire story line with Ed Begley Jr. was unnecessary and didn't add anything to the film. I also wish their was less focus on the southern girl's mother.
This certainly isn't Allen's best piece. However, this type of work is the reason why I respect and enjoy him as a filmmaker. His films are always fun and serious at the same time.
