Review of Whatever Works (2009) by Panos T — 10 Jul 2010
Whatever works is a funny, yet uneven look at life.
The Good:
The film is FUNNY! The main protagonist is a self proclaimed "genius" who has a pessimistic and dark view of life and it's meaning. The film is all dialogue, and this is were it shines! The deadpan, dark, and sarcastic nature of the main character is just hilarious and at times thoughtful! Evan Rachel Wood does a great job as the little country girl who falls in love with this cretin! She looks like another person in this film and her country accent works great! The supporting cast was great as well. The story is a little out there but is interesting to say the least.
The Bad:
The films views are forced down throat wether you agree or not. It is very liberal to say the least. If you agree with the views then good, but if you don't too bad! Woody is not slowing down or analyzing consequences and outcomes for you! Ultimately it's "what ever works" right??
Let's face it the story is completely unbelievable! This young beautiful, fun loving girl falls on love with this old, bald, pessimistic man, who verbally mistreats her. The young girl chases the old man until the man gives in and marries her! Yea right! Sounds like Woody Allen has been fantasizing a little to much. The rest of the story is also unbelievable and ultimately silly. Woody had a great chance to be insightful here, instead he dives in to his fantasies and the final outcome seems a bit indulgent.
Overal:
When the film is funny, it's HILARIOUS! When it's serious it's silly, and when it's thoughtful it's pretentious. I would say check it out, but be prepared for an uneven, distorted, silly, and ultimately Woody Allen view of life.
