Review of Whatever Works (2009) by Eduardo S — 09 Apr 2011
Definitely the best Woody Allen movie of at least the last 10 years! Mostly in part due to Larry David playing Woody's usual lead character - he's much more charming - and Allen's definitely a better director than he is an actor! Larry essentially plays a more extreme (if that's possible!) version of his Curb character, albeit with some very accurate, if pessimistic, insights.
Evan Rachel Wood is great - haven't seen her in anything bad yet - and her innocence perfectly balances Larry's disdain. Starts off and finishes with two brilliant monologues "breaking" the fourth wall (done in a really smart way), which are quite poignant - "go with whatever works to get some happiness out of this life"!
