Review of Whatever Works (2009) by Shiela E — 27 Sep 2011
Woody Allen's comedy set in New York. It tells us of Boris a divorced physicist, a clever man with a negative outlook in life that gets to know a young Southern homeless girl and allows her to live in his flat. Eventually they get married, and eventually he will have to meet his in-laws, an apparently classical divorced couple. As soon as the pair arrive, New York makes them change their lives and their mind set.
This is a typical Woody Allen movie with picturesque characters and that particular insight into human relationships that makes his cinema one of a kind.
I have just a tiny little problem with likeliness, what is the likelihood of an attractive young girl to fall in love with an ageing, poor, cranky, bald and lame man, thrice her own age? Very close to zero I would say.
Leaving that aside this is a sweet funny and ironical movie about love, sex and anything in between.
