In Whatever Works, the protagonist constantly insults the intelligence of those whom he encounters. Playing the prototypical Woody Allen sad-sack cynic, Larry David may be delivering the insults in the film, but the film's greatest insult to intellect is the one administered to the audience courtesy of the director himself.

The characters, David's included, are bland stereotypes. The message, be who you are and do whatever works best for you, is a cliche, which is ironic since David's character condemns their usage repeatedly throughout the film.

Perhaps the entire film was irony over irony over irony, and is actually profoundly intelligent and indeed over the heads of normal viewers. More likely, it's just a shitty movie.
