Review of What Women Want (2000) by Paulita C — 03 Sep 2011
Listening to the thoughts of women in this film, you'd never know they were capable of thinking about more than their appearance, men, or reproduction. I hate to break it to the makers of this film, but women are not solely concerned with Clinique and calorie counting.
The sad part is that this movie is ostensibly about a misogynist learning the error of his ways. However, underlying this message is a view of women as one dimensional and trivial creatures. Thus, "What Women Want" is reprehensible because it tells its audience that inside their own minds, women don't really care about "boy stuff" like politics, current events, the course of their careers, or even the last time they got their oil changed. Women only care about their biological clocks and whether or not they're fat.
That being said, the movie does have its funny moments and the chemistry between Mel Gibson and Helen Hunt is decent. Mel Gibson has excellent comedic timing and he uses it.
If there had been a single woman working out a chemical formula or considering legal precedent in her head in this movie, I'd have given it two more stars.
