Review of What We Do in the Shadows (2014) by Ross W — 30 Jul 2015
Pretty much one of the funniest movies I've seen in a long time, What We Do In The Shadows is a hilarious mockumentary (think The Office meets The Lost Boys) that touches on the lives of four vampires living in modern New Zealand as a camera crew follows them around the city.
There is a lot to enjoy about this film: the practical monster effects, the special effects, the fight scenes (especially a clever one involving a rotating room), the actors in their parts as the vampires, and the whole over-played vampire genre being skewered with great success (Nick eating a chip has to be one of the funniest gags in the film).
HOWEVER, THERE IS A WORD OF WARNING: this movie has some dark humor in it with a tinge of violence and quite a few death scenes. If blood and (some) gore are not your thing, then I'd warn you to stay away. The rest of you will have a bloody (pun intended) good time.
PROS: The dark humor and characters; Cool practical effects mixed with some good cgi; Great nods to some of the old-school vampire films and supernatural lore; WWDITS was great in length, dialogue, plot, pacing, and acting.
CONS: Seriously, I can't readily think of one.
