The film shows how religion can trap a culture in an out-dated way of life. The film tries to offer some glimmers of hope as the girls are clearly coming to resent the restrictions on their lives that Islam forces upon them.

However, we know how deeply embedded those obsolete ideas are, not just in Islam, but in Judaism, Catholicism, Hinduism and the rest. So the overall effect of the film is sobering, rather than inspiring.

But I am glad I saw it and I salute the film-maker's courage in making it. Obsolete religious ideas must be confronted and rejected. This film shows us why that is so.
