Review of What to Expect When You're Expecting (2012) by James W — 31 Oct 2013
Jennifer Lopez is the strongest actor in the whole movie, her part of the story almost overshadows every other one in the movie. What To Expect When You're Expecting handles drama and emotion a lot better than comedy, so don't go in expecting to cry with laughter, but luckily this movie is very well acted by the most appealing looking cast in a comedy for years.
My only issue is that the comedy is lacking in some parts. With such an appealing cast and a whole host of comedic talent you'd think this rom-com would be a consistently hilarious, giving a witty look on pregnancy and the ups of downs of expecting, which is does at times but it has a few dull patches where quotes or awkward scenes are meant to be funny but don't deliver the laughs.
This minor flaw only happens a few times, they are then overcome by the charming cast. Brooklyn Decker, Dennis Quaid, Rebel Wilson, Rob Huebel, Thomas Lennon and Rodrigo Santoro stand out as the funniest characters in the movie, they deliver the most laughs throughout the film.
Elizabeth Banks and Ben Falcone are the most likeable couple, very sweet and charming. What To Expect When You're Expecting is a light and funny rom-com, and the last thirty minutes is fantastic, the film really excels here.
The whole cast come together, it ends on a really happy note and overall this is a solid 8/10.
