Review of What Maisie Knew (2013) by Casey B — 29 Oct 2013
The little moments in this film are absolutely perfect. Every actor in the 5 piece ensemble nails it, and Onata Aprile is simply stunning. Rarely have you seen a film that does such a stupendous job of telling a story from a child's POV, and only once every couple of years does a film so honestly deal in the heart wrenching so as to cause me to tear up.
For all of these reasons, I badly want to give What Maisie Knew a higher rating. Unfortunately, I found the scriptural leap that is taken at the end of the first act (and sets the rest of the film in motion) rather jarring.
More importantly, the film's ending feels like an easy out and (arguably) requires somebody doing something out of character.
