Review of What Just Happened (2008) by Johnny G — 09 Jul 2009
Somehow, this movie pegged the audience's reaction with the title, but left the work F**K out of it (perhaps that's a stylistic choice. But really, what the hell happened? You have a movie about making movies, but while it's quite possible to do so with style, grace, and success (see Adaptation), this film fails in absolutely every respect. The script was awful, the story incoherent and bland, and the characters were just lame. And when you throw in actors playing themselves, come on, just don't.
Yes, it's possible to read into this film, and yeah, maybe that adds something to it. Perhaps this is a film addressing the helplessness of people to truly govern their lives. Maybe it's a critique of the film industry today, and this film serves as the liaison to exposing the truth. Maybe it represents the loss of power, and the misrepresentation of people with it who actually have nothing. Or maybe, and my money's on this one...maybe the movie just sucks, and tried to criticize, and tried to symbolize, and tried to entertain, grip, and capture the audience. Aside from attracting the Entourage and Curb Your Enthusiasm group, there are not too many people that would be willing to sit through and full-of-itself movie that just wastes time.
