Review of What Happened to Monday (2017) by Alex G — 07 Oct 2017
Netflix just keeps on surprising us. Imagine a world where overpopulation and famine are serious problems. The best solution the world can come up with is enforcing a one-child policy, where the rest of the siblings are put into cryo-sleep, a machine that freezes babies in time, so that they can be woken up later, into a better future. What Happened to Monday is not only a unique and fresh story but also an example of superb editing and acting.
In this problematic world are born seven identical sisters, to a mother that dies soon after birth. Left to be taken care of by their grandfather, they must act as one and try to hide and survive in a world where one little mistake, could get all of them but one put into cryo-sleep.
The fact that director Tommy Wirkola managed to first, make a movie about seven sisters with a single actress and second, pack this story into two hours is an amazing feat. With the perfect use of flashbacks, he created a concise storyline where every scene matters and builds up to the end. With one of the most entertaining and mind blowing acting feats of this year, Protagonist Noomi Rapace plays seven different sisters. Each has their own unique personality, undoubtedly a sign that this actress knows her craft.
If you like a mixture of science fiction and action, you should definitely watch this film, if you don't, you should still watch this film. Writers Matt Botkin and Kerry Williamson create a world seen many times before, but with a completely different and engrossing story. If there is one flaw in What Happened to Monday, is the fact that there are many characters being introduced and we don't necessarily know their background stories, which leaves us craving for more. Craving for more is not necessarily always a bad thing.
