Review of What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962) by Ricky M — 02 Apr 2008
Somehow I had managed to never see this until it played my local cinema recently. So I took the chance to see it and I am so glad I did as I thought this was a fantastic film.
Bette DAvis and Joan Crawford play two aging Hollywood siblings who both found fame at different ages but now live together due to Joan being a cripple. What unfolds is a darkly humorous, I found it extremely funny in places, and twisted tale of Sibling Rivalry.
Bette Davis does steal the film as 'Baby' Jane Hudson, terrorising her sister Blanche. Davis is fantastic here as she slowly goes over the edge.
The end sequence is truly bizarre and disturbing but even on first viewing is up there in my favourite movie endings. Tension builds nicely and as things unfold you may get the feeling things aren't exactly as they seem.
The fact that Crawford and Davis were such bitter rivals in real life also adds wonderfully to the film.
Recommended.
