Review of What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962) by Stephen M — 12 Mar 2008
You KNOW a film is done right, when 40 plus years after it's release, it still has the power to stop your heart, make you gasp, and wonder if you're really seeing this. Well, you are really seeing this, and boy oh boy, does Baby Jane come back with a vengeance.
Bette Davis and Joan Crawford deliver unbeatable performances in this blackest of black, ever-so-macabre comic thriller. Director Robert Aldrich sets a pitch perfect tone that is only unsettled by the films off-kilter ending, but after the previous 130 minutes, you learn to forgive him.
As good as the old ones get, a shame they don't make 'em like this anymore. Keep your sisters at bay and your rats in the cellar!
