Review of What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962) by Marie N — 15 Mar 2012
Baby Jane Hudson was every childs dream. But when she was an adult, it was her sister Blanche who had success as a successful movie star. An accident in the 30s left Blanche in a wheel-chair dependant on her sister, but flash forward 30 years and Jane has taken a turn for the worse.
I'll start by saying that I only bought this movie because a scene from it was used in House of Wax (2005), and I finally got around to watching it last night. I'm not familiar with Joan Crawford or Bette Davis films, but do know of them. The film was creepy and superbly set-up, and it is clear to me that this inspired many psychological thrillers of modern day cinema. The black-and-white film also had comedy which worked really well and i'm actually quite shocked at how much I did enjoy this film. The ending was sadistic, and it really does have some relatable scenes believe it or not.
The premise is intriguing, and the gothic look of Jane is enough to terrify children. Whilst watching this film in 2012 the 'proper' way of speaking is a tad hilarious, and the fact that pretty much every character smoked a cigarette on camera shows how much cinema has changed over the 50 years since it's release.
The acting was great. Joan Crawford playing the crippled movie star Blanche was excellent. Bette Davis was the star, though, her heavy smokers voice and raspy vocals were perfect for the role.
Overall What Ever Happened To Baby Jane is a creepy classic movie that is just as fun as it is sadistic. My rating is 3/5.
